- Story Text: U.S. Senator John Cornyn of Texas appealed to voters at a campaign stop in north suburban Houston, Texas on Saturday (February 28), three days before a competitive Republican primary election for the Senate seat he’s held since 2002.
Cornyn is facing off with Republican frontrunners Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Representative Wesley Hunt of Texas in a hotly contested GOP race.
"Character is on the ballot," Cornyn said. "I believe voters still care about their elected officials, and they want people who will tell them the truth. And unfortunately, the attorney general has a record of doing the opposite."
Cornyn seemingly referenced the numerous scandals surrounding Paxton over the years, including a 2023 vote by the Texas House of Representatives to impeach Paxton over bribery and abuse of office allegations.
Public opinion polls show Cornyn trailing Paxton and Hunt in the state’s most cutthroat contest.
While President Donald Trump visited Corpus Christi, Texas on Friday (February 27) to discuss the nation’s energy policies, Trump declined to endorse a candidate in the Senate primary, although he told reporters that day he had “pretty much” decided who to support but would not share the name.
