- Story Text:The British crime drama “Peaky Blinders” concluded in 2022, but the Shelby family saga continues with a new sequel movie “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” that had its global premiere at England’s Birmingham on Monday (March 2).
Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy reprises his role as Thomas “Tommy” Shelby, the leader of the Peaky Blinders gang which is inspired by a real-life crime outfit from 19th century Birmingham. This time, he must come out of a self-imposed exile to reconnect with an estranged son and also grapple with Birmingham facing war-era threats from Nazi Germany.
Speaking to Reuters, Murphy said that “it feels right to return” to Birmingham where the film and the series.
The film’s screenwriter Steven Knight, who also created the original series and served as showrunner, similarly said “I wouldn’t have had it any other way than to have the premiere here.”
Parts of the film were also shot at Knight’s Birmingham-based studio Digbeth Loc which Knight hopes can turn the West Midlands city into “a place where, whether it's multimillion dollar budgets or zero budget, you can come and make it.”
The film also includes new characters played by high-profile actors, such as Rebecca Ferguson who plays a Romani woman named Kaulo and Tim Roth as the film’s Nazi-serving villain Beckett.
Ferguson told Reuters that working with Murphy was a dream come true.
The “Dune” actress also revealed that Murphy offered the role of Thomas Shelby’s illegitimate son Duke to Irish actor Barry Keoghan over a text on Father’s Day.
While Keoghan didn’t appear at the premiere, Murphy was all praise for his Oscar-nominated co-star. Murphy added: “He’s electric when you put a camera on him.”
Murphy, who occasionally also DJs and is a self-professed admirer of Irish rock band Fontaines D.C., added that he played a part in choosing a few songs for the film’s soundtrack. When asked for his favourite song in the film, he mentioned “Puppet”, an original track recorded by Fontaines DC lead singer Grian Chatten for the film.
“Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” is set to have a limited theatrical release on Friday (March 6) followed by a Netflix streaming release on March 20.
