- Story Text: Police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of pro-Iranian protesters who had gathered outside the Green Zone diplomatic compound in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, where the U.S. embassy is located, on Sunday night (March 1)
Protesters ran in the street, some carrying Iranian flags. Explosions could be heard
Iran's neighbours to the east and west, Pakistan and Iraq have the world's largest Shi'ite Muslim populations after Iran, and were the scenes of some of the worst unrest from crowds angry at the U.S.-Israeli attacks.
Israel launched a new wave of strikes on Tehran on Sunday and Iran responded with more missile barrages, a day after the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei pitched the Middle East and the global economy into deepening uncertainty.
U.S. and Israeli strikes - and Iranian retaliation - sent shockwaves through sectors from shipping to air travel to oil, amid warnings of rising energy costs and disruption to business in the Gulf, a strategic waterway and global trade hub.
