- Story Text: Members of Nigeria's Shi'ite Islamic Movement took to the streets of Kano on Sunday (March 1), protesting the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Demonstrators marched through the northern city carrying portraits of the late Iranian leader and waving Iranian flags.
Khamenei was killed in joint U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on his compound in Tehran on Saturday (February 28).
The protesters dragged American and Israeli flags on the ground to vent their anger.
The Islamic Movement of Nigeria has been banned by the government since 2019 but maintains influence in parts of northern Nigeria with significant Shiite populations.
The protests in Kano were part of broader demonstrations across countries where Iran holds influence, including Pakistan and Iraq.
