- Story Text: The Nigerian national soccer team, known as the Super Eagles, arrived home in Abuja on Tuesday (February 12) with the African Cup of Nations' trophy after beating Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final played in Johannesburg, South Africa on Sunday (February 10).
Huge crowds gathered at the airport to greet the team who, under the guidance of coach Stephen Keshi, had won their third title and first since 1994 with a goal from Sunday Mba, a midfielder with just a handful of caps to his name who still plays domestically in Nigeria.
Captain Joseph Yobo held the cup aloft at the top of the aircraft steps and then spoke of his joy at winning the title.
"It feels great you know, it's amazing," he said. "You know it's been a long time that we saw this kind of welcoming. We won the trophy, everybody is happy, you know, the future looks very bright for the Super Eagles. It's celebration time because we won the African Nations' Cup after 19 years waiting so the feeling is amazing."
The team were heading for a reception with the Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan later on Tuesday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
