- Story Text: Thousands of people attended funeral prayers in the early hours of Monday (March 2) for protesters killed in clashes outside the U.S. consulate in Karachi, as the death toll from violent demonstrations across Pakistan over the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rose to at least 23, officials said.
Mourners gathered to pay tribute to those killed during Sunday's protests.
At least 10 protesters were killed in the southern port city of Karachi where security guards at the U.S. consulate fired on demonstrators who breached the outer wall, officials said. Another 34 people were wounded, all by gunshots, Karachi's Civil Hospital reported.
Protesters breached the outer security layer and set a vehicle ablaze outside the main gate before being pushed back, local government spokesman Sukhdev Assardas Hemnani told Reuters. U.S. consulate security officials opened fire on the protesters, he said, adding that authorities were in constant touch with consulate officials and all were safe.
Reuters reporters heard gunfire and saw tear gas fired in streets around the compound. Video footage showed protesters holding pictures of Khamenei and chanting anti-U.S. slogans before clashes erupted. The provincial government ordered a high-level inquiry into the escalation.
