- Story Text: Benicio del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Delroy Lindo, Sean Penn and Stellan Skarsgard are all nominated for the best supporting actor Oscar at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15.
Del Toro and Penn, co-stars of action-packed dark comedy "One Battle After Another", will be competing against each other. Del Toro plays karate instructor Sensei Sergio in the film, who helps Leonardo DiCaprio's leading character battle an unfolding and perilous situation. Del Toro is a previous Oscar winner for "Traffic" in the same category in 2001.
Penn is nominated for his role as the film's antagonist Steven Lockjaw. No stranger to Oscar awards, having previously scooped the best actor gong for "Mystic River" in 2004 and for "Milk" in 2009, his latest nod is his sixth appearance on the Academy Awards' shortlist. He recently won both the BAFTA and the Actors Awards (formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards) for best supporting actor for the role as Lockjaw.
Australian actor Jacob Elordi is nominated for his first-ever Oscar for portraying The Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s horror "Frankenstein." Starring alongside actors Mia Goth and Oscar Isaac, Elordi's performance in "Frankenstein" has earned him nominations at the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes. He won best supporting actor at the Critics Choice wards in January.
Elordi is known for "Saltburn" and "Priscilla", and performs alongside Margot Robbie in current cinematic release "Wuthering Heights."
British‑American actor Delroy Lindo has received his first-ever Oscar nomination for his role in Ryan Coogler's vampire thriller "Sinners", where he plays blues musician Delta Slim. The actor is known for his previous work in "Da 5 Bloods", which earned Lindo nominations in several film critics' associations.
Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard is the oldest of the Oscar nominees in the best supporting actor category this year. The 74-year-old actor portrays Gustav in Joachim Trier's Norwegian family drama "Sentimental Value," a father who seeks to reignite his film directing career while navigating difficult relationship dynamics within his family.
Skarsgard is known for his previous work in historical drama "Chernobyl" as well as in the "Dune" films.
"It's a small movie," he said of "Sentimental Value". "So we are depending on getting nominated, or the festivals to get publicity... But this film has strangely enough, it has made quite a splash and getting quite an audience even before the press came out and it attracts anybody, from my 30-year-old boy to old people like me. So it obviously has something for everybody and it connects with people very well."
