- Story Text: A total lunar eclipse, commonly referred to as a "blood moon," was observed early Tuesday (March 3) in Mexico City, as the moon turned a coppery-red hue against the pre-dawn sky.
The phenomenon, visible across much of the country, drew spectators to the esplanade of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
The Earth, moon and sun align to produce a total lunar eclipse, making the moon lose its usual white light - a reflection of the Sun's light on its dusty surface.
The reddish appearance of the lunar surface is caused by rays of sunlight around the outer edge of the eclipse shadow, or umbra, being filtered and refracted as it passes through Earth’s atmosphere, bathing the moon indirectly in a dim copper glow.
