- Story Text: "The Rocky Horror Show" is returning to Broadway after more than 20 years, with an all-star cast assembled by Tony Award-winning director Sam Pinkleton.
"Well, you know, 'The Rocky Horror Show' is this, like, mythological thing, this, like, uncontainable thing, and so I knew that it needed a group of people who were as wild and as full of contradictions and as hilarious and funky as 'The Rocky Horror Show' itself. And so I was really careful and intentional about, like, this person and this person, and this person, then, like, if we put them all in a dish together it will either explode or something magical will happen. And, like, right now it's looking like the latter, thankfully," said Pinkleton.
Both the "Rocky Horror" stage musical and film have become hugely popular, with audiences dressing up and interacting with the characters, and fan clubs staging theme parties.
"The Rocky Horror Show" first opened in London in 1973 and has been in continuous production around the world since. Over 40 million people in 15 languages have seen the show over the course of 52 years.
The musical follows Brad and his fiancée Janet on a road trip to visit their former college professor when their car breaks down. From then, they set upon a strange adventure that includes larger-than-life characters Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Riff Raff, Columbia, Magenta, Eddie, and Rocky.
When the show opens in New York, it will be filled with legendary songs, including "Dammit Janet," "Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me," "Hot Patootie," and "Time Warp."
Actor Josh Rivera hopes audiences enjoy the weird and freaky performances they plan to deliver each night.
"What I really, really like about this show is that it's freaky and strange and it just leans into the bizarreness of what a person can be," said Rivera.
Stepping into the iconic role of Columbia is actor Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, who is making her Broadway debut.
"Sam (Pinkleton) called me up and he was like, I have something for you. And I was like, oh my God, what is it… And when he mentioned that it was Columbia, I was floored and I said yes instantly. There were no ifs, ands, or buts. It was just a complete yes."
Also making their debuts are Luke Evans and Juliette Lewis.
"I'm excited. I mean, there's a little bit of nerves, but I think we're now realizing these are ours. I've just said earlier, you own 'Magenta' now," Evans said, speaking to Lewis.
"Magenta's yours and Frank is mine. And for however long we're in this show, they're ours. So, we are responsible for them," he added.
The show will officially open at Studio 54 on April 23 for a limited run until June 21, 2026.
