- Story Text: Oscar-nominated filmmaker Josh Safdie's drama "Marty Supreme" will compete for the Oscars' top prize of best picture on March 15.
An A24 film starring Timothee Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion and Tyler Okonma, also known as 'Tyler, The Creator,' "Marty Supreme" is co-written by Safdie and tells the tale of table tennis player Marty Mauser's pursuit of greatness against many obstacles. Chalamet plays Mauser.
"When I met Timmy... someone's like, 'Oh you’ll meet the next superstar’. And I hear that a lot sometimes. And it's pretty irksome," said Safdie at the film's New York premiere last year.
"But then when I met him, I met this kid in the corner of a room who was bursting out of his skin. I met Timmy Supreme and I met a wide-eyed dreamer who was present but not where he wanted to be. And that was the seed of this project really, because when you cast somebody, you want to align with their soul and not some name on a page," he said.
Leading man Chalamet said the project was an "obvious project to do," citing his collaboration with Safdie. Chalamet has co-produced the movie, saying he is "proud" of it.
The film has garnered several awards this season, including best actor prizes for Chalamet at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice and London Critics Circle Film Awards. He also won the Spotlight award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January. Safdie won best screenplay at the New York Critics Circle Film Awards. The film also won movie of the year at the AFI awards.
Nominated for nine Oscars, including best director, best original screenplay, and best actor, "Marty Supreme" will compete against best picture contenders including Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another," Chloe Zhao's "Hamnet," and Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" among others.
