- Story Text: Hundreds of Indonesian Muslims gathered on Thursday (March 5) at the residence of the Iranian ambassador in Jakarta to offer prayers and condolences, following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in joint U.S. and Israeli strikes last week.
The attendees, many dressed in black, participated in Koran recitations and communal prayers. Organisers described the event as an expression of solidarity with the Iranian people, who are observing a 40‑day mourning period declared in Tehran.
Participants said they came to show support for Iranians facing ongoing conflict and instability at home.
“Even though he was not our president, we feel a deep sense of loss and sadness. Many here believe the circumstances of his death were unfair. As people who care about justice and freedom, we regret that a leader they admired has passed away. For us, it’s a reminder to stand against wrongdoing. We hope his legacy will inspire others,” Tita Herlita told Reuters during the event at the Iranian Ambassador's residence.
Many attendees said they could only offer moral support from afar, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the escalating regional tensions.
“Here in Indonesia, what we can do is offer our support and prayers. We hope the situation will end soon, and we pray the Iranian people remain strong under the pressure they are facing,” Suryana, who goes by one name like many Indonesians, said to Reuters.
Some expressed frustration with global powers, urging international leaders to reconsider their approach towards the region.
“People here want world leaders to realize serious mistakes have been made. They believe the death of their leader won’t weaken their faith; instead, it strengthens their spirit,” Rasmidi said.
Iran has entered a prolonged period of mourning, while uncertainty grows over who will succeed Khamenei and what direction the country will take amid rising tensions across the Middle East.
In Jakarta, the gathering ended with a final prayer as an expression of solidarity.
