- Story Text: Drone footage captured on Tuesday (March 3) showed renovation works at Mexico City's biggest soccer stadium, Estadio Banorte, a key venue for the 2026 World Cup.
Workers were seen inside and outside the stadium, traditionally known as Azteca, as preparations continued ahead of the March 28 friendly between Mexico and Portugal, scheduled to mark the venue's reopening.
The stadium closed in May 2024 for renovations.
With a capacity to hold over 87,000 attendees, according to the Mexico City government pre-renovation figures, the venue was first opened in 1966.
The Estadio Banorte is the only stadium to have hosted two World Cup finals, according to FIFA: in 1970, with Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele, leading Brazil's victory over Italy, and in 1986, with Diego Armando Maradona's "Hand of God" goal helping open the way for Argentina's victory over England.
