- Story Text: Fighting between Pakistan and Afghanistan intensified along their 2,600-km border on Friday (March 6), forcing thousands of civilians to flee their homes
Residents in a town at the Torkham border crossing say shells have damaged houses and forced families to evacuate.
Haji Shah Iran, a Pakistani labourer from the town, said he and his family fled their home and were now staying with friends after "shells started raining down on us".
The town remained quiet on Friday with only a few vehicles on the roads, though some houses were damaged and smoke could be seen across the border.
Pakistani and Afghan troops exchanged fire at several points along the border, and the United Nations said the week-long conflict has displaced more than 100,000 people.
Both sides accused each other of attacks. Afghanistan’s defence ministry said Taliban forces struck Pakistani military posts along the border, while Pakistani security sources said ground and air operations targeted military positions including Kandahar.
