- Story Text: Nigerian Foreign Minister Olugbenga Ayodeji Ashiru signed bilateral agreements with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez, during a visit to the Caribbean island on Monday (September 2).
Both foreign ministers touted the long history of cooperation shared between the island and the African nation.
At the signing ceremony Rodriguez said Cuba wants to continue to strengthen ties.
"I reiterate, in the name of the Cuban government, our full willingness to continue developing the friendly and cooperative relations that unite our countries," Rodriguez said.
Many Afro-Cubans trace their ancestry to Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African nations giving the island strong cultural ties to the region.
Nigeria also supports the lifting of the five-decade-old U.S. trade embargo against Cuba.
"Nigeria and Cuba will continue to work together within the United Nations to ensure that there is peace and security throughout the world," Ashiru said.
The two countries have enjoyed diplomatic relations since 1974. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
