- Story Text: Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Renate Reinsve and Emma Stone will compete for the best leading actress Academy Award on March 15.
The nomination for her performance in “Hamnet” is Buckley’s second Oscar nod. She was nominated in the supporting actress category at the 2022 awards for “The Lost Daughter”.
In “Hamnet”, Buckley plays playwright William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes, a woman grieving her son who dies in the plague.
The Irish actor is the top contender for the award, having picked up best actress trophies for “Hamnet” at the Actor Awards, BAFTA Awards, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.
Another leading player in the race is Australian actor Rose Byrne who is nominated for her performance in the dark comedy “If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You”. Byrne plays a psychologist on the verge of a breakdown as she grapples with her personal and professional struggles.
Byrne previously won the Berlin Film Festival’s Silver Bear and best leading performance at the Film Independent Spirit Awards for her performance.
Kate Hudson is nominated for her leading turn in music biopic “Song Sung Blue”. Hudson plays Claire Sardina, a real-life singer who performed with her husband in a Neil Diamond tribute band.
“Song Sung Blue” marks Hudson’s second Oscar nomination after she was nominated for best supporting actress in 2001 for the musical drama “Almost Famous.”
Renate Reinsve is nominated for Norwegian family drama “Sentimental Value” in which she plays a stage actor troubled by a dysfunctional relationship with her estranged father.
Emma Stone is also in the running for sci-fi thriller “Bugonia," in which she plays a CEO who is kidnapped and suspected of being an alien. She has already picked up two Oscars for her performances in “La La Land” and “Poor Things”.
