- Story Text:Bahrain has opened government-run shelters in schools to house residents who fled neighbourhoods near the U.S. Navy base in Manama after recent attacks.
Ram Krishna, a resident in Bahrain, said he and his wife left their home close to the base after hearing a blast and headed to Seef area. He said they later heard a second explosion and moved between locations before being taken by bus to the shelter arranged by the Interior Ministry.
His wife, Vijian Lakshmi, said she was in Juffair near the base when an alert came to her phone and an explosion followed, prompting them to rush for cover.
Jason Barthelemy said he also left Juffair after hearing an explosion, taking his dog and a few belongings.
Amal Bujandal, director of the Information and Follow-up Directorate at the Northern Governorate, said authorities prepared two shelters and received about 2,000 residents.
Since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday (February 28), Iran has launched hundreds of missiles and more than 1,000 drones at Gulf states allied with Washington. Most were intercepted by air defences, but some residential and commercial buildings, infrastructure and U.S. military bases have sustained damage.
