- Story Text: The literary detective Sherlock Holmes remains one of the most adapted figures in pop culture with the latest take being the Prime Video series "Young Sherlock" that focuses on the younger days of the crime-solving mastermind.
With Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the titular protagonist, "Young Sherlock" also stars Irish actor Donal Finn as a younger version of James Moriarty, otherwise known as Holmes's arch-nemesis in the source material. But instead of starting off with their rivalry, "Young Sherlock" reimagines a friendship between them and paints Moriarty in a sympathetic light.
As Finn told Reuters: "In the books Sherlock has like this boundless energy to end what Moriarty is doing, you know. And it's with this kind of cloak of mystery that he talks about this man. I think no one is kind of born with a sense of kind of immorality. I think it's like just an unfortunate set of circumstances and maybe like how he had to grow up and he learned that, you know, things aren't given to you and sometimes you have to fight for them."
For Tiffin, navigating Holmes's classic eccentric social behaviour was an interesting aspect to explore. The actor explained: "I enjoy watching Sherlock be completely emotionally unaffected while helping someone, you know, who's grieving their dead father or something. They figure out how it's come about and he's completely emotionally detached."
The ensemble cast also includes Max Irons as Sherlock's older brother Mycroft and Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou'an, an original character created for the series. Tseng, who made her acting debut in 2024's Netflix series "3 Body Problem", describes her character as "a very strong woman" who can "throw the world upside down".
As for Irons, the actor admired the work ethic of filmmaker Guy Ritchie who previously also directed two Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr.
The actor told Reuters: "Guy is a bit of a force of nature. He comes on set, comes in, smashes it all, swears a lot, throws things up in the air and gives you no time to think or reflect. You just have to go and you have to trust in his vision."
Similarly, Irons also praised his co-star Colin Firth who plays a supporting role as an Oxford professor. "He's, in so many films, but he's the sweetest, funniest man around. And a reminder to all of us, not to take it seriously that we are there playing, having fun."
"Young Sherlock" starts streaming on Prime Video from Wednesday (March 4).
