- Story Text:Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris paid tribute to Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. on Friday (March 6) saying she "predicted a lot about what's happening right now."
Addressing the memorial service for the civil rights leader, Harris lamented he would not be "with us right now to help us get through this."
Jackson, who died last month at the age of 84, was a leading advocate for voting rights and desegregation.
The memorial on Friday at the House of Hope, a 10,000-seat venue on Chicago's South Side, was celebratory, with a choir performing rousing gospel songs while attendees stood, clapped and sang along.
Harris also highlighted Jackson's vision of interconnected struggles for justice across diverse communities. saying, "that was Jesse's Rainbow."
Jesse Jackson Jr., son of the late reverend, spoke about his father's legacy beyond the political and into the psychological.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro also spoke at the service and asked President Donald Trump to "move away from Netanyahu."
President Donald Trump did not attend due to his schedule and ongoing events, a White House official said.
