Shi’ite Muslims marched through Nigeria’s northern city of Kano on Friday (March 13) in support of Iran and the Palestinian cause, marking al‑Quds Day.
Hundreds of protesters from the Islamic Movement dragged U.S. and Israeli flags along the ground and carried makeshift effigies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump’s image also appeared on posters marked with red cancellation symbols.
Al‑Quds Day, observed on the last Friday of Ramadan, is held annually in solidarity with Palestinians.
This year’s demonstrations come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent developments involving Iran.
Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and carried banners reading “Islamic Movement” and “For world peace Israel must be destroyed.”
Some clerics held posters depicting Iran’s newly elected Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.
The United States has recently issued a security alert warning its citizens in Nigeria of a potential terrorism threat.
While Shi’ite protests have remained peaceful since the Iran conflict began, authorities say they continue to monitor the situation.
