- Story Text:India's main opposition Congress party staged protests in several cities across the country on Friday (March 13) over a shortage of household liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders due to the ongoing Iran conflict.
The Iran war has led to the suspension of around a fifth of global crude and natural gas supply as Tehran targets ships in the vital Strait of Hormuz between its shores and Oman, and attacks energy infrastructure across the region.
Congress accused the government of failing to address rising cooking gas prices and limited availability for consumers.
The protesters voiced concerns over price surge for the Indian middle class which uses the LPG-run-cylinders extensively for cooking.
To mitigate the crisis, India invoked emergency powers and directed refiners to maximise production of LPG to prevent a shortage of the cooking fuel. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
