- Story Text: Thousands of women and supporters marched through central Athens on Sunday (March 8) to mark International Women’s Day, delivering a strong anti-war message alongside calls for women’s rights and equality.
Feminist organisations, labour unions, students and workers filled the streets, chanting slogans and carrying banners reading “No to war” and “Safe and legal access to abortions.” Some marched with children, while others beat drums, sang, and waved flags as they moved towards the Greek parliament.
Banners read “War is the most extreme expression of patriarchy,” alongside chants of “Women to the streets to fight and resist the war they are bringing."
“I think the anti-war message comes first, because the choice is between socialism and barbarism,” Zaneta Lisikatou, 35, a doctor and feminist told Reuters. “We are already in a time of war, and what is being prepared is the slaughter of war. All of us, united, must fight against war.”
Some protesters voiced solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and criticised U.S. foreign policy.
