- Story Text: Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn opened parliament in a ceremony late on Saturday (March 14), paving the way for Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to form a new government after his Bhumjaithai Party was victorious in last month's election.
Bhumjaithai, which won at least 191 seats in the 500-member parliament, said it would team up with the third-place Pheu Thai Party and several smaller parties in a ruling coalition commanding more than 290 seats, raising the prospect of a stable government after a prolonged period of political volatility.
Lawmakers are also scheduled to reconvene on Sunday (March 15) to endorse a new house speaker and two deputy speakers.
The voting day for the new prime minister will likely be on Thursday (March 19), the deputy leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, Siripong Angkasakulkiat, told Reuters.
