- Story Text: The appeals trial of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy after a conviction that handed him a five-year prison sentence will begin on Monday (March 16).
Sarkozy was sent to prison in October 2025 after he was found guilty in September of criminal conspiracy over efforts by close aides to procure funds for his 2007 presidential bid from late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
He was freed from jail and went home in November 2025. A Paris court ruled he could be released while he appeals against his conviction for conspiring to raise funds from Libya.
Sarkozy, who led France between 2007 and 2012, was the first former French leader to be jailed since Nazi collaborator Marshal Philippe Petain after World War Two.
He has consistently denied wrongdoing and has said the ruling on his case would undermine faith in France's judiciary.
The appeals trial will run until June 3.
