- Story Text:The race for best adapted screenplay at the 2026 Oscars is dominated by writer-directors like Paul Thomas Anderson, Chloe Zhao and Guillermo Del Toro.
Anderson currently seems to be the frontrunner for his political thriller "One Battle After Another" which is adapted from the Thomas Pynchon novel "Vineland". For his writing contributions, Anderson has picked up adapted screenplay awards at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Critics Choice' Awards.
Meanwhile, Zhao is in the running her period family drama "Hamnet". The film dramatises the marriage of playwright William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes as they grieve the death of their son. Based on the novel of the same name by Maggie O' Farrell, "Hamnet" is co-written by Zhao and O'Farrell.
As for Guillermo Del Toro, the Mexican filmmaker is nominated for his screenplay of his Netflix adaptation of "Frankenstein". Adapted from the classic sci-fi novel by Mary Shelley, the film had been a passion project for him for several years.
Also in the running are the writing duo Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar for the Netflix drama "Train Dreams". Bentley, who also directs the film, teamed up with his "Sing Sing" collaborator Kwedar to adapt Denis Johnson's novella of the same name.
The category is rounded up by journalist and screenwriter Will Tracy for writing Yorgos Lanthimos's dark sci-fi comedy "Bugonia" which is based on the South Korean film "Save the Green Planet".
