- Story Text:Jose Antonio Kast won Chile's presidential runoff on December 14, defeating center-left candidate Jeannette Jara by more than 15 percentage points. As he prepares to take office on March 11, analysts say the incoming president faces a complex set of domestic and international challenges that could test his ability to deliver on his campaign promises.
Kast, a 60-year-old veteran conservative, campaigned on tough measures against crime and irregular migration, tax cuts, and deregulation. He also holds conservative positions on abortion and has faced scrutiny over his past support for former dictator Augusto Pinochet.
But the global landscape has shifted significantly since his election victory, according to Guillermo Holzmann, a political analyst and academic at the University of Valparaiso. "Since he won the second round until now, Donald Trump has changed the playing field, and so has China," Holzmann said. "Therefore, today to achieve his same objectives, he has to negotiate differently with everyone."
Holzmann added that Kast must carefully navigate relations with both Washington and Beijing. "He has two monsters that are China and the United States, who are breathing down his neck," the analyst said.
On the domestic front, Holzmann cautioned that Kast's path to governance is far from straightforward. "Kast does not have his political future or his government's future paved. He is entering a swampy area, and he needs to know where the rock is that allows him to step and move forward," he said.
On the streets of Santiago, public opinion was mixed. "I hope Kast does well and delivers as he said in his campaign, and that he remains firm," said Jessica Pozo, a local vendor. Pedro Alis, a farmer, said he remained hopeful despite the challenges ahead. "He's just getting started. And it seems that he has been left with a very complicated situation. But we have a lot of hope in the new president," he said.
Others expressed concern. Commercial engineer Ivania said she feared the impact of the new government on women's rights and social programs. "I'm afraid of this president who is coming in, for women," she said, citing worries over access to education and other public services.
Kast's election is seen as part of a broader rightward shift in Latin America. He is set to be inaugurated on March 11, 2026.
