Murder mystery thriller "Imperfect Women" had its premiere at Los Angeles' Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Tuesday (March 10).
The TV series, which begins streaming next Wednesday (March 18), follows three close friends, Eleanor (Kerry Washington), Nancy (Kate Mara) and Mary (Elisabeth Moss) who believe they know everything about each other.
However, when Nancy is found killed, secrets and lies will be revealed, showing nothing is what it at first seemed.
The show is based on the novel of the same name by British author Araminta Hall, and on reading it, Moss knew she had to produce a series about it.
She told Reuters, "It just was so much fun, and I really was in the mood for something fun. I really was in the mood to go on a wild ride to feel like I didn't know who did it, who was sleeping with, who was lying to who. And to me, that's a really fun show to watch. And I wanted to see that.".
Washington was next to come on board as not only a producer but an actor after Moss introduced her to the story.
For Mara, playing the murder victim also had its thrills as a lot of the series is shown in flashbacks.
"Obviously, my character is really going through some hell. But that makes it so much more fun to play and to watch. You know, I feel like people could really get lost in this show," she said.
The show, led by executive producer Annie Weisman, is a predominantly female production with female camera operators, directors, and producers.
Washington talking about how a female led production brings out the nuances of women's behavior, said, "I think it's really fun because we worked very hard on making sure that these women were three-dimensional....You know, when you say imperfect women, really, you're just saying human women, right? Like, we're all imperfect."
The author of the book Araminta Hall took on a role on production as well as executive producer.
She embraced the Americanization of the story, saying, "My book is not glossy. It's very British, my book. So it's got that sort of gritty edge to it. And I loved seeing the glamour and, you know, them all, these beautiful, amazing women in these incredible clothes. It's been so exciting to watch."
And for Moss, she just hopes audiences feel the same way she did when she read the novel.
She said, "It's the main thing for me. Like I want people to be guessing. I want people to be thinking they know what's going to happen and then realizing that they're wrong. I want people to think it's him and her and that person and them together. And like, I just I want those water cooler conversations."
