About $350,000 (USD) worth of products are being packed into suitcases to be shipped to top acting and directing Oscar nominees this year.
For 24 years, Lash Fary of marketing firm Distinctive Assets has curated swag for nominees, aiming to ensure everyone feels like a winner.
"This is something we do independently of the Academy with the intention of elevating small businesses, female-founded brands, and minority-owned companies, and also because losing sucks," Fary said.
Fary said the bags are intended to spotlight small businesses, including those owned by minorities and women, such as Danuta Mieloch, owner of Rescue Spa in New York and Philadelphia.
"I think this is one of the most exciting moments, actually, because for me, it's literally the emotional part. You know, coming from Poland 30-something years ago, and now being at the Oscars, it means a lot," Mieloch said.
Companies featured in the bags pay a fee to include their products. This year, Rescue Spa will provide $450 worth of services and products. It is the spa's third year participating, and Mieloch said the exposure is cost beneficial for the brand.
"I feel like it positions us in a better place. And obviously, it aligns with our philosophy. Because, you know, to be nominated, it requires diligence. It requires a lot of work and excellence. And I feel like my products are aligned with that," Mieloch said.
Gifts range from five-dollar snacks to a home interior design package valued at more than six figures.
"It could be more, it could be less depending on the size of your home and what you're doing. If you're rebuilding after the fires, it could be a full rebuild for $300,000. If you just want to redo a room in your home because your kids have gone off to college, she'll do that too," Fary said.
This year's bag includes five vacations, taking nominees from the snowcapped mountains of Finland at Hideout Villas to the beaches of Costa Rica at Essence of Dreams.
Fary said he does not always receive personal feedback, but considers public acknowledgment of the gifts a win.
"Whenever they take a trip, for example, and post pictures on social media, or they go in and get the waitlisted Sculpt and Lift facial at Rescue Spa, which one of the nominees already does, then that's the best feedback of all," Fary said.
