- Story Text: A plane took off from Beirut on Monday (March 9) as smoke wafted over buildings in the Lebanese capital’s southern suburbs.
Lebanon has been pulled deep into the war in the Middle East since Hezbollah opened fire to avenge the killing of Iran's supreme leader, igniting an Israeli offensive which has killed more than 400 people in Lebanon, according to Lebanese authorities.
Israeli strikes have sent columns of smoke billowing from Beirut's Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs, and over the hilltops of southern Lebanon.
Global air travel remains severely disrupted after the war in Iran forced the closure of key Middle Eastern hubs, stranding tens of thousands of passengers worldwide and disrupting thousands of flights.
