- Story Text: India's oil minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Tuesday (March 10) that there was no shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for household use, seeking to calm consumers after reports of panic buying.
India, the world's second-largest LPG importer, has invoked emergency provisions to prioritise domestic needs, directing refiners to step up output for local consumption. The move has left parts of the hospitality sector struggling to secure cylinders, industry representatives said.
Puri said in a post on X that energy imports were continuing to arrive through multiple sources and routes, and that the government was taking steps to ensure uninterrupted and affordable supplies to domestic consumers, urging the public not to panic.
Domestic LPG prices have been raised for the first time in about a year, as the conflict in the Middle East pushes up the cost of imports, which account for about two-thirds of India's annual consumption.
Qatar, India's biggest supplier of liquefied natural gas, halted production last week after Iran launched strikes on Gulf countries, following Israeli and U.S. attacks.
