- Story Text: Israel claimed on Tuesday (March 17) to have killed Iran's security chief, Ali Larijani, widely seen as one of the most powerful figures in the country.
Israel's defence minister Israel Katz made the announcement and added that Israeli forces had also killed Gholamreza Soleimani who led the volunteer Basij militia, which plays a major role in domestic security.
In his last public appearance on Friday (March 13), Larijani said that U.S. President Donald Trump's war on Iran was "out of fear, out of desperation."
Photos from that day show the security chief at a rally in Tehran to mark Al-Quds Day.
Reuters verified the location of the images from the buildings, the trees and the road layout seen in the photos, which matched file and satellite imagery of the area. The date when the photos were taken was verified by corroborating footage posted on Friday showing Larijani at the rally.
