- Story Text: At the NVIDIA GTC Developer Conference in San Jose, California industry leaders and analysts gathered as NVIDIA showcased new artificial intelligence technologies and discussed surging demand for computing power on Monday (March 16).
Former Intel CEO and chip industry investor, Pat Gelsinger described the current moment in the tech industry as transformative.
"This is a thrilling time for the industry. I've sort of said that, you know, we were getting a little bit boring, and then AI happened, it's no longer boring. And I think today, this is no longer boring. We're seeing breakthroughs in optics, breakthroughs and cooling, breakthroughs in scale, and lots of challenges still in front of us," Gelsinger told Reuters.
Gelsinger added that emerging technologies such as quantum computing and cryogenics could further reshape the industry in the coming decades.
"The best days to be a technologist are yet in front of us. This is a thrilling couple of decades to come," Gelsinger said.
Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, told the audience that demand for the company’s graphics processing units (GPUs) continues to soar.
"The computing demand for NVIDIA GPU is off the charts. Spot pricing is skyrocketing. You couldn't find a GPU if you tried, and yet, in the meantime, we're shipping GPUs out. Incredible amounts of it, and demand just keeps on going up," Huang told the audience during the keynote.
Overall, Gelsinger described the keynote as a sweeping display of innovation.
“Technology tour de force… we saw things across optics, next generation architecture, rack scale and new cooling technologies,” Gelsinger described.
But he added that the industry will now be watching closely: "We need Nvidia to deliver, the industry is built around them."
