- Story Text: Incumbent Prime Minister and leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, Anutin Charnvirakul, is set to be nominated as Thailand’s prime minister on Thursday (March 19).
Anutin is widely expected to be selected following his party’s victory in the Feb. 8 general election.
Born to an influential politician‑businessman, Anutin studied engineering in the United States and served as president of his family’s construction firm, Sino‑Thai, before entering government as deputy health minister in 2004. A five‑year political ban following the 2007 dissolution of Thai Rak Thai stalled his career, but he returned in 2012 as Bhumjaithai leader.
Since then, he has leveraged the networks of party founder Newin Chidchob and ties with the conservative establishment to secure spots in successive governments, most recently serving as interior minister in two Pheu Thai‑led administrations.
Outside politics, he is known for collecting Buddhist amulets and recreational flying, sometimes used for transporting emergency organ donations.
With a sluggish economy, strained relations with Cambodia after deadly border clashes and renewed political volatility, managing turbulence will be central to his premiership.
