- Story Text:Residents in Tokyo on Friday (March 20) praised Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s composure at a summit meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump greeted Takaichi warmly at the White House on Thursday (March 19) and said he believed Japan was "really stepping up to the plate" on Iran, unlike the NATO alliance. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Takaichi said she had briefed Trump on what support Japan could and could not provide in the strait under its laws.
During the meeting Trump also drew a parallel between U.S. strikes on Iran and Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor during the Second World War when he was asked why he had not told allies about his war plans.
One resident in Tokyo said given the situation, it was probably "very difficult" for Takaichi to respond, as she sat silently next to Trump. Another resident, however, said he felt "a bit uneasy".
