- Story Text: Tourists and locals in Spain’s Valencia enjoyed watching satirical sculptures depicting politicians, popular culture and fantasy characters before they were set on fire during the traditional Fallas celebration on Thursday (March 19).
Ninots, Valencian for dolls, are large satirical sculptures made of wood, plaster and papier-mâché that are displayed for days before being burned in a climactic ceremony. Scenes made out of several ninots are known as Fallas, which is also the name of the festivity.
War dominated this year’s themes, with many figures depicting U.S. Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in ironic scenes criticising military actions in Gaza and Iran.
At Valencia’s city hall square, the main installation featured a giant Charlie Chaplin figure dressed as his famous soldier character in the movie “Shoulder Arms” with the word “Hope” at its base.
