- Story Text: The oil tanker seized on Friday (March 20) by French authorities that President Emmanuel Macron said belonged to Russia's shadow fleet arrived near the southern French city of Marseille on Monday (March 23).
The French Navy seized the Deyna, a Mozambique-flagged vessel that was suspected of flying a false flag, after it was identified to have belonged to a network of vessels that enables Moscow to export oil despite Western sanctions. The ship had been sailing from the Russian port of Murmansk.
The Deyna was docked near the port of Marseille-Fos on Monday (March 23) as police boats patrolled around it.
Western sanctions imposed on Russia for invading Ukraine and aimed at cutting its oil revenue have led to the rise of a shadow fleet of tankers helping Moscow keep its crude exports flowing.
While European sanctions remain in place, the U.S. has temporarily eased sanctions on the sale of Russian oil as the Middle East war disrupts oil supplies and boosts prices.
