- Story Text: Ko Wen-je is the presidential candidate for the small Taiwan People's Party (TPP) in an upcoming general election in January 2024.
The former trauma surgeon won a landslide victory as an independent candidate in a race to become Taipei mayor in 2014, and held the position for two terms. Ko sought engagement with China while he was mayor, while the TPP has also campaigned to forge better ties with Beijing.
The TPP and fellow opposition party Kuomintang (KMT) had initially agreed to work together against the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), but talks collapsed after a dramatic showdown broadcast live on television in which party leaders bickered and revealed sensitive private conversations.
Ko, 64, has chosen a TPP lawmaker, Cynthia Wu, whose family is a major shareholder of conglomerate Shin Kong Group, as his vice presidential candidate.
