- Story Text: Danish Foreign Minister and the leader of the centrist Moderates party Lars Lokke Rasmussen celebrated his party’s outcome following Tuesday’s (March 24) parliament election.
Rasmussen has been dubbed by the media as the ‘kingmaker’, as his party could be decisive in a divided parliament where the left-wing bloc, falling short of an outright majority, is only slightly ahead of its right-wing rivals.
“One thing is that this is a small country with 6 million inhabitants in a world of 8 billion that is in upheaval...We must unite,” Rasmussen said as he called upon unity amongst different parties.
The Foreign Minister also highlighted his party’s disposition to focus both on national and international issues alike.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's Social Democrats appeared headed for their worst election outcome in over a century, as migration and welfare concerns obscured broad support for her defiant stance toward Washington over Greenland.
In power since 2019, Frederiksen, 48, had campaigned on a promise that her tough and tested leadership skills would help the Nordic nation navigate a complex relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump and the European response to Russia's war in Ukraine.
