- Story Text: Portuguese police have arrested a French man on suspicion of document forgery and illegal possession of a firearm, and were investigating whether he may be linked to a suspected double homicide.
The National Republican Guard (GNR) police force said in a statement on Wednesday (March 25) its officers stopped the man during a road inspection near Meda, northeastern Portugal, on Tuesday and found that documents he presented appeared to be forged.
A search of the vehicle also uncovered a firearm allegedly lacking legal documentation and about 17,000 euros in cash, the Judicial Police (PJ) said in a separate statement.
Both forces said subsequent checks indicated the detainee had been flagged as a suspect in serious crimes, including kidnapping and a suspected double homicide.
The PJ said investigators later gathered what it described as robust evidence that led, on Wednesday morning, to the discovery of two bodies buried in a remote area, presumed to be the man's current and former partners.
The investigation is being led by prosecutors in Meda. Authorities said work was continuing to identify the victims and consolidate the evidence.
