- Story Text: More than 140,000 colourful tulips are transforming the ‘Parc de l’Indépendance’ in the Swiss town of Morges on Friday (March 27) into an enchanted landscape for its annual Tulip Festival.
Running from March 28 to May 10, the event features 350 varieties, fragrant gardens, local food stands, family activities, and a new open‑air exhibition tracing the tulip’s global history.
According to Veronique Hermanjat, the president of the “Morges Fleur du Leman” Association, the festival’s roots go back to 1971 and the tulip was chosen to announce the arrival of spring.
But adapting this tradition is increasingly challenging: “There’s the weather, the climate… increasingly early blooms. You can already see the park today at the end of March, there’s already colour, so we have to adapt. Perhaps one day we’ll move the flower show forward by a week.”
The World Tulip Society chairman, Ibo Gulsen said the tulip’s resilience is part of what makes this flower, and the festival, enduring.
“Most of the tulips come from the Netherlands, but their botanical origin really comes from Central Asia… where the first tulips thrived.”
While individual blooms last one to two weeks, combining early and late varieties allows festivals like Morges to stretch over six, he said.
