- Story Text: A landmark 1990s Southern California band is getting its due with a multimedia exhibit and tribute at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.
The exhibit, "Sublime: Straight out of Long Beach," is timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the release of Sublime's landmark eponymous album.
With hits like "What I Got," "Santeria," and "Doin' Time," the band found itself at the vanguard of the alternative ethos of the decade.
The album went on to become a 5x Platinum winner, but its arrival was also marked by tragedy. Just two months after the release, frontman Bradley Nowell died from a drug overdose. In the intervening decades, his son, Jakob, has stepped into his place.
"There's always a need for nostalgia, and there's always a need for some sunshine, and Sublime really provides both of those," said exhibit curator Kelsey Goelz.
The band's distinctive sound blends ska, reggae, and punk rock and embodies the coastal vibe of the Long Beach community, where the group was founded back in the 1980s.
As 90s fashion enjoys a resurgence, the timing is right to revisit the band, Goelz said.
"People are looking at this music wanting to play it again, they're looking to jam with their friends, which is exactly how Sublime came to be and… I think we just need this kind of laid-back vibe right now," she said.
The exhibit includes album covers, photos, and band instruments, as well as handwritten notes and lyrics.
The band itself is celebrating the 30th anniversary with new performance dates, festivals, and the release of a new album, "Until the Sun Explodes."
"Having that kind of relevancy with something that just started as a few friends hanging out and playing music, it's really grown into a big fire," said Jakob Nowell.
"Sublime: Straight out of Long Beach" will be on display until September 7th.
