- Story Text:The tiny Mediterranean city state of Monaco was preparing on Friday (March 27) to welcome Pope Leo for the first visit by the head of the church in centuries.
Arriving by helicopter for the one-day trip, Leo expected to visit the palace and hold an audience with Prince Albert before greeting the public from the balcony and would hold a mass for 15,000 people in the country's stadium.
Monaco was already prepared on Friday, decorated with photos of the pontiff and Monegasque red and white flags, with large screens set up around the city.
Leo is also expected to visit the church of Sainte Devote where Marie Ruiz, a retiree from the southern French town of Saint-Remy-de-Provence who had come to see Leo, said the visit would be “an extremely important and remarkable event for the whole Catholic community”.
The trip is expected to focus on environmental protection, the defence of life and war and the neglect of vulnerable populations, the Vatican said.
