- Story Text: A wall and part of the roof of the historic mansion collapsed on Tuesday (March 24) in the northern Peruvian city of Cajamarca.
The Villanueva mansion, constructed in 1792 and designated a national cultural heritage monument, sustained significant structural damage.
Peru's Ministry of Culture said in a statement that the building is at risk of further collapse, as the facade wall shows signs of tilting and instability, and an investigation has been opened.
An official from the Ministry's regional office told local outlet RPP that the collapsed section borders a nearby construction site, prompting authorities to examine whether the work may have contributed to the damage.
The mansion is historically significant as the site where the Cajamarca declaration of independence was signed in the early 19th century.
Reuters confirmed the location by the road layout, buildings facades and street signage which matched file and satellite imagery. The date when the video was filmed was verified by the original file metadata. The coordinates for the collapsed building are -7.154955283254902, -78.51652409354257.
