  • Story Text: Protesters played a symbolic soccer match on a major urban highway in Mexico City on Saturday (March 28) to demonstrate against the upcoming FIFA World Cup, saying preparations for the tournament were being prioritized over basic public needs. One banner read "Global event, local eviction," reflecting protesters' claim that World Cup-related projects were contributing to displacement and disruption in the city.
    According to participants, the action on the ring road was intended to denounce what they called the "World Cup of Dispossession" and to highlight housing, water, transport and electricity problems in the Mexican capital. Protester Yenix said Mexico City is facing housing and water crises, and that authorities should not have been prioritizing FIFA and major sporting events when residents lacked basic rights.
    Mexico will co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup along with the United States and Canada. Matches in Mexico are scheduled to be played in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, with the tournament running from June 11 to July 19.
