- Story Text: Thousands of people from all over Italy took to the streets of Rome on Saturday (March 28) to join a 'No Kings' demonstration, part of an international mobilisation planned throughout Europe and the United States.
The march took place amid growing political tensions, following Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's recent defeat in a key referendum, as Italians rejected a flagship judicial reform she had championed.
The protest, called "against kings and their wars", was also directed against U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with several Palestinian flags waving in the streets.
Among the protesters was office worker Giovanna Tierro, who wore an emergency blanket to commemorate the migrants crossing the Mediterranean. She said she had joined the protest "not for myself, but for the others."
The march, which was due to end near the Basilica of St John Lateran, was extended to the Verano Cemetery due to higher-than-expected turnout, organisers said.
