- Story Text: Spain's new deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister, Carlos Cuerpo, and new Budget Minister, Arcadi Espana arrived at Moncloa palace on Monday (March 31) ahead of a cabinet meeting.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had named España as Budget Minister and promoted Cuerpo to Deputy Prime Minister on Wednesday (March 26) as part of a cabinet reshuffle.
Espana replaced Maria Jesus Montero, who stepped down to lead the Socialist Party's campaign in upcoming regional elections in Andalusia. The new Budget Minister previously served as secretary of state for territorial policy and will take charge of Spain's budget policy at a crucial time.
The government is currently negotiating with regional governments over a new funding model and has yet to submit a national budget for 2026. Cuerpo, who will continue as economy minister alongside his new role, becomes the first man Sanchez has named deputy prime minister since taking power in 2018.
When Sanchez first took office, he formed what was then the first government with gender parity in Spanish history. The reshuffle comes as Spain faces important economic and political challenges in the coming months.
