- Story Text: People celebrated the Jewish holiday of Passover in a Tel Aviv bomb shelter on Wednesday (April 1), as the country's war with Iran raged on outside.
The event, hastily put together in the preceding 24 hours, gave people staying in the public shelter - a repurposed underground car park - a way to take part in the family-oriented holiday, said organiser Hadas Ragolsky, a city councillor in Tel Aviv.
Air raid sirens and air defence systems were repeatedly triggered in Tel Aviv on Wednesday evening as Iran fired a volley of missiles around an hour before the start of Passover, the Jewish festival of freedom.
Israel’s fire and rescue service said there had been multiple “impacts” in the greater Tel Aviv area. It was not immediately clear if the impacts were caused by missile strikes or debris from missile interceptions.
“One of the texts we have in the Passover Seder talks about the fact that in every generation there are those who rise up and try and destroy the Jewish people,” said Rabbi David Benjamin, who led the Seder in the shelter.
The war, which was triggered when the U.S. and Israel carried out military strikes against Iran on February 28, has spread across the Middle East, killing thousands of people and causing the biggest disruption ever to energy supplies.
