- Story Text:Indian Navy has ensured security of commercial ships and oil tankers at critical maritime chokepoints, said Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday (April 03).
He made the comments after flagging off the latest naval frigate 'Taragiri' in southern Visakhapatnam.
Iran has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passageway, which carries about a fifth of the world's total oil consumption, in retaliation for U.S.-Israeli strikes which began in late February.
Iran has said it has permitted "friendly nations" including China, Russia, India, Iraq and Pakistan passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
While six Indian ships have exited the Strait, 18 Indian‑flagged vessels carrying around 485 Indian seafarers remain in the Persian Gulf.
"Whenever there is a situation of crisis at these points, Indian Navy has ensured security of commercial ships and oil tankers," said Singh.
Positioned as multi role ship, Taragiri, is a predominantly indigenously made and equipped with high-end weapon systems and missiles, said media reports.
The ship is designed to reduce footprints on Radar, making it a high-grade stealth naval frigate. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
