- Story Text: Several aircraft were destroyed during the U.S. mission to find a stranded airman in Iran, the Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday (April 5) according to Tasnim news agency.
“The enemy’s desperate efforts to rescue the pilot of its downed fighter jet failed, thanks to the grace of Almighty God, divine assistance, and timely actions and a joint operation by the fighters of Islam from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Islamic Republic of Iran Army, the heroic Basij, and the Law Enforcement Forces,” Tasnim news posted on its Telegram channel.
The spokesperson of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, the unified command of the Iranian armed forces, said the downed aircraft included a C-130 military transport plane as well as two Black Hawk helicopters.
Reuters could not independently verify the claims by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The airman rescued by special operations forces was the weapons-systems officer on the downed F-15, a U.S. official told Reuters.
The official told Reuters that as the weapons-systems officer was moved from near a mountain to a transport aircraft parked within Iran, U.S. forces had to destroy at least one of the aircraft because it had malfunctioned.
