- Story Text: Peaceful May Day demonstrations in Berlin have
turned violent as youths threw bottles and stones at police.
The riots broke out in Berlin's Kreuzberg district
on Saturday evening (May 1), the site of annual May Day
street battles between youths and police.
Hundreds of police in riot gear moved quickly against
crowds of demonstrators in the west Berlin Kreuzberg
district after groups of protesters began throwing bottles,
stones and other objects, including signal rockets.
Nearly 10,000 police from Berlin and across Germany
were being deployed as the capital braced for another night
of violence after 111 people were detained overnight for
throwing bottles and stones at police in the Prenzlauer
Berg district.
Berlin has been marred by May Day clashes between
left-wing anarchists and police every year since 1987.
