- Story Text: About 100 Syrian men, women and children arrived on foot and on donkey backs in the Lebanese town of Shebaa on Monday night (November 11) after hours of traversing a rugged terrain that divides the Syrian village of Beit Jann from Lebanon.
The villagers said they were fleeing bombardment by Syrian government forces positioned in the village of Saasaa near Mount Hermon where there has been fighting between government forces and rebels in recent weeks.
Thousands of residents of Beit Jann and its surrounding area have fled to Shebaa over the past two weeks, Lebanese media say.
One woman who had just arrived said her group had left many behind on their way.
''There are a lot of people still behind, some of them are sick and could not get here as quickly as we did,'' she said as she sat inside a Red Cross ambulance.
Temporary accommodation is being set up for the refugees in Shebaa before they can find shelter elsewhere in the region with the help of non-governmental organizations and local authorities.
Lebanon estimates that nearly 800,000 Syrian refugees are currently in the country, in around 1,600 locations. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
